As we age, even the healthiest of individuals will have wear and tear in their bodies. Roughly 20% of surgeries in the United States are those over the age of 65. These surgeries include knee replacements, hip replacements, cataract surgery, and heart surgery. While Advanced Home Health Care offers a number of services and partners that can aid in the recovery of these surgeries, we want to focus on the knee and hip replacements.
Knee and hip replacements should make you like new! Pain and difficulties you had walking and moving before should subside after your surgery, but that comes with some work. This work comes in the form of orthopedic rehabilitation. What are the benefits of rehab? Outside of learning how to use your new hip/knee, rehab will help you:
- Restore normal movement in your joint
- Build up strength in the joint surrounding muscles
- Let you get back to your normal activities (especially the ones you couldn’t do when your knee/hip were limiting you!)
- Help with circulation, particularly right after surgery, so you don’t have to have problems with blood clots
When should you do rehab? Some doctors will suggest physical therapy the day after your surgery. You want to start bringing mobility to the joint as soon as possible. While movement is limited and light in the beginning, we have highly skilled orthopedic therapists who can deliver outpatient-level physical therapy to patients in their own homes.
What types of orthopedic therapy do we offer?
- Soft tissue mobilization
- Joint mobilization
- Manual stretching
- Manual traction
- Electrical stimulation
Full recovery from surgery takes about 3 to 6 months, depending on the type of surgery, your overall health, and the success of your rehabilitation. While you could do your rehab in a physical therapist’s office or a hospital, we know that being in the comfort of your own home, without worrying how to get to and from your appointment, can aid in a quicker recovery and a more comfortable process.
